YAMADA Houkoku, saved financial crisis and succeeded to reform the politics of Bicchu-Matsuyama Domain in the end of Edo era, presented this phrase to KAWAI Tsuginosuke.
What made him succeeded to save financial crisis and reform politics? The answer is that he deeply understood economy.
Also, his philosophy, enriching people in the Domain(country) makes the country richer and more vital, leads to him success.
Moreover, he developed Yangmingism to Sincerity Centrality, set Sincerity as his way and obeyed it. These are factors of his success, too.   YAMADA Houkoku is a professional of finance. He also had knowledge of politics and put importance on practice. In the end of Edo era, he rebuilt finance of Bicchu Domain, which was called “poor ITAKURA” because the Domain was very poor , for 8 years He also reformed education and military government. After ITAKURA Katsukiyo, head of Bicchu Domain, was assigned as the principal member of the 15th Shogun(sovereign, TOKUGAWA Yoshinobu)'s council of elders, YAMADA Houkoku went to Edo(capital city of Japan, Tokyo) and assisted the Shogun. YAMADA was a political adviser of Edo Shogunate and he wrote a draft of “Taiseihoukan(restoration of imperial rule)”. On the other hand, he educated some excellent personnels such as MISHIMA Cyushu, the trainer of Emperor Taisho, KAWAI Tsuginosuke, the main character of ”The Ridge” written by SHIBA Ryotaro, KAWATA Oukou, the authority of Classical Chinese literature, Imperial Advisor and one of the three authorities of Literature in Meiji era.   KAWAI Tsuginosuke, the main character of ”The Ridge” (written by SHIBA Ryotaro), learned Yangmingism through study in Edo and under the guidance of YAMADA Houkoku.This is for considering how to manage Nagaoka Domain under the disturbance in the end of Edo era. He thought that the Domain was a culturally and economically independent organization apart from the Edo Shogunate and tried to reform the Domain like a principality in Europe.However, the era has changed swiftly.Suddenly Satsuma Domain and Choshu Domain became a standard-bearer of the new era. In the background of strong power of Domains in West Japan, they ask Nagaoka Domain to obey them.KAWAI visited Odiya to meet IWAMURA Seiichiro, commissioner of Western Army and asked him to give some time, but the request was rejected. After the breakdown of this meeting, he participated in the war as a member of Eastern Army. During the war, he was hit by stray bullets and injured.
